Jefferson is a city in Jackson County, Georgia, and the county seat, located in Northeast Georgia about 55 miles northeast of Atlanta along Interstate 85 and roughly 19 miles west of Athens. Home to about 13,000 residents, it is a community of more than 200 years whose historic core has anchored a period of rapid residential growth along the interstate corridor. The city's most distinctive piece of history is medical. Dr. Crawford W. Long, a Jefferson physician, first used ether for surgical anesthesia here on March 30, 1842, an achievement commemorated by the Crawford W. Long Museum in the heart of downtown. That museum, along with the courthouse square and surrounding historic buildings, gives Jefferson a genuine small-town sense of place even as new subdivisions have expanded its footprint. Jefferson's location drives much of its recent growth. Education is organized through two systems: Jefferson City Schools serves students within the city limits, while the Jackson County School System serves the rest of the county and is based in Jefferson.
