LaGrange is a city in Troup County, Georgia, about sixty miles southwest of Atlanta in the foothills of the western Piedmont, near the Alabama state line. It serves as the county seat and is the principal city of the LaGrange micropolitan statistical area, with a population of roughly 30,900 in the 2020 census. The city sits along Interstate 85, the main corridor linking Atlanta to Montgomery, which has long tied LaGrange into the region's economy. Historically a textile center, LaGrange grew around the mills and enterprises of the Callaway family, whose legacy is preserved at Hills & Dales Estate, a Georgian-Italian home built in 1916 and surrounded by the Ferrell Gardens, among the best-preserved nineteenth-century gardens in the country. Downtown retains a historic district of early-twentieth-century commercial buildings, and LaGrange College, a private four-year liberal arts institution, brings a continuing academic presence to the city. Manufacturing remains the backbone of the local economy. Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia operates a major assembly plant in nearby West Point, and Duracell and other manufacturers anchor Troup County's industrial base. Tourism has also grown, centered on West Point Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir extending thirty-five miles along the Chattahoochee River with about 525 miles of shoreline and roughly 26,000 acres of water, plus attractions such as the Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park resort. Recreation revolves around the lake and the region's open landscape, with fishing, boating, and camping at parks around the shoreline, and community assets such as The Thread Trail, a multi-use path network, and Southbend Park in the city. LaGrange pairs a small-city pace and historic downtown with a substantial industrial and logistics economy, giving it a practical, working character distinct from Atlanta's suburbs.
