Oakwood is a city in Hall County, Georgia, in the Gainesville metropolitan area, situated just west of Interstate 985 and a short distance from the southern shore of Lake Lanier. Its population was 4,822 at the 2020 census, and it has ranked among Hall County's faster-growing communities as the Gainesville area has expanded. Oakwood's development has been shaped by two forces: its position on a major northeast Georgia corridor and its role as an educational center. The city is home to the Gainesville campus of the University of North Georgia and to Lanier Technical College, institutions that give Oakwood a larger daytime and student presence than its population alone would suggest.
