Oxford is a small city in Newton County, Georgia, occupying a gentle, wooded setting about 35 miles east of Atlanta. The community exists largely because of higher education: in 1834, Georgia Methodists established the Georgia Methodist Conference Manual Labor School near Covington, and two years later chartered Emory College, named for Bishop John Emory. The founders chose the site for its distance from city distractions, a deliberate rural setting that still shapes Oxford's character today.
